Latency in Forex: Measuring and Causes of Delay

In scalping and automated strategies, positions are held for seconds to tens of seconds. In such a window, even delays that people generally do not notice determine the outcome of a trade. The instruction from the Expert Advisor must reach the broker's server as quickly as possible and without fluctuations; otherwise, the price will shift in the meantime and the trade will be executed at a different level than the trader intended. In the previous article about latency in forex and its impact on slippage We calculated specific losses. Here we look at how to measure latency correctly and what actually constitutes it.

Why milliseconds matter for scalping and EAs

A swing trader holding positions for hours or days will hardly notice latency in the tens of milliseconds. The situation is different with scalping targeting a few pips per trade or an Expert Advisor reacting to short-term signals. Time elapses between sending an order and its confirmation by the broker, during which the price may move, and the higher the trading frequency, the greater the cumulative effect of these small deviations over a month. On top of that, an EA trades without emotions and without breaks, so even minor systematic delays consistently affect its results, trade after trade.

Ping versus real execution latency

Standard order ping measures how quickly the server's network layer responds to an ICMP packet. This is a useful reference figure, but it is not the same as the time taken for the broker to actually process a trading order, that passes through the platform's application layer and may differ. Therefore, for more serious setups, it is advisable to combine multiple measurements:

Recommended measurement procedure:
ping server.vasbroker.com - basic indicative RTT
tracert server.vasbroker.com (Windows) / mtr server.vasbroker.com (Linux) - where exactly does the delay occur along the path
Test execution directly in MetaTrader - in the Tools menu → Options → MetaTrader Server tab shows the actual ping between the platform and the trading server, which is a value closer to real execution conditions.

Tool mtr (or tracert on Windows) is useful mainly because it shows individual hops between the VPS and the broker's server. If latency suddenly spikes at a specific node, it usually indicates an overloaded transit point along the route, not an issue on your end.

What actually affects latency

How to verify latency before ordering a VPS

The most reliable method is to request a ping test (or tracert/mtr) from the server directly to your broker's address: a reputable provider will perform this measurement upon request. At FastVPS.cz, our servers are located in a Prague data centre with direct connections to key European nodes, so latency to most European brokers remains in single-digit milliseconds.

For EA and scalping strategies, we recommend a plan with more dedicated performance - at STANDARD or PRO package There is a lower risk that latency will be worsened by the load on shared hardware. The specific configuration of Expert Advisor on a VPS, including automatic start after reboot, is described in the article. Expert Advisor on VPS: step-by-step setup.

Summary

Latency is not an abstract figure from a provider's advertisement; it is a measurable quantity that can be verified by your own test before you order a VPS. A combination of ping, tracert/mtr and a test directly in the trading platform provides a much more accurate picture than a single command. On top of that, the server's location relative to the broker and the quality of the provider's peering play a bigger role than the processor's performance alone.
